Gentrification is...

Released: 2010
Format: Folded Paper
Country: USA
Genre: Installation

This new project combines an installation and public dissemination. The core of the piece is the “fortune teller” or "chatterbox," a children’s folded paper game often used to determine who one will marry or what one will become. I have reimagined this game as a way of questioning how we define gentrification.
A pile of several hundred of these games sits near a series of questions about who is implicated in gentrification. I am also distributing piles of the games to various places in Brooklyn where a variety of people can stumble upon them.

This piece is on view as part of the Museum of Contemporary African Diaspora Arts' (MoCADA) exhibit The Gentrification of Brooklyn: The Pink Elephant Speaks through 16 May 2010. MoCADA's website
