Primer: What a Girl Should Know

Released:
Format: Altered Book
Country: India
Genre: Visual Art

This hand-made book represents some of the ways that the indoctrination of gender norms – which happens in all cultures – is enforced in India. The cover depicts a boy and a girl because all children are taught gender norms and rules. The pages are deconstructed from several children’s primers (textbooks) and from a woman’s magazine, and depict such varied information as times tables, how to write and read Hindi, how to cook, and how to raise children. The ideals of education, marriage, motherhood, glamour, and wealth, alternate in these pages.
